Did Google Update Their Algorithm?

The first step should be to find out if Google updated their algorithm. They make upgrades almost daily, and while many of them are so subtle it won’t disturb your results, major changes can sink your rank overnight. Do some research and find out if any of the recent upgrades might have negatively affected your website, and take the necessary steps to ensure your web pages remain compliant with Google’s standards.

Restore Lost or Broken Links

Another common reason for a sudden rank drop is lost or broken links. Find out if the problem stems from an internal or external link. Hopefully the issue is caused by an internal link. While it may take a while to find out which link is causing you trouble, it should be easy to fix. Unfortunately, sometimes an external link is the culprit. This requires a lot of extra hunting and work. Use your analytics software to find out which external links bring in the most traffic from other sites. Then check those sites to see if they’ve removed your link, or if it no longer works. Then, you’ll have to email or contact the site owners or administrators, and wait patiently for the answer. Most often, it’s an honest mistake that can be altered within a few minutes. Sometimes, the site itself has been deactivated, or their web developer has purposefully removed the link and has no intention of restoring it. If this is the case, you may have to suffer through a lower rank in the short term, and work diligently to create new links to your site. There are many ways to do this, including reaching out to industry bloggers and journalists, or publishing guest posts for popular websites.

Improve Site Metrics

Next, you’ll want to look at your site’s most essential metrics. Google favors pages with quick load times, and a low bounce rate. If you’ve noticed a steep decline in these important metrics, then it’s time to correct the problem. You may need to invest in a site audit to improve your load time, or find new ways to keep your audience engaged longer.

Investigate the Competition

Another reason businesses see a drastic lowering of their rank is good old fashioned competition. It’s important to keep in mind that organic search rankings aren’t set in stone. Web developers and SEO specialists must work diligently to keep their standing. Inspect the sites who have climbed above you. Are they implementing a technique you’ve refused to embrace? Have they updated their web design in ways that makes your site outdated or less popular?
